Getting Around
1. How do I navigate around this Blog? Like, how do I find stuff?
This Blog has pages and categories. The pages are all along the top menu (right under the title and subtitle of the Blog). Each page in this Blog features more “permanent” resources, such as Contact Information, the Region Calendar, this FAQ page, among other things. The categories, listed on the top of the left sidebar, categorize (pardon the redundancy) each of the posts. It’s pretty straightforward.
If you’re looking for a post/article, look it up under the Categories. If you’re looking for something else, chances are it’s under one of the pages.
If you’re still lost, go to the Welcome page, and read “Guide to the Blog”.
2. Ok. I’ve come to the blog, and I don’t see like an intro or anything… all I see are a bunch of posts. Why?
That’s the way blogs are set-up: the home page has the most recent news up front and center. I could give a detailed history on why and what, but to keep things short: the blog assumes you’re a frequent visitor. Therefore, all you have to do to get the latest news is visit the blog, read what’s new, and leave. If you’re new to the Blog, you’ll stay a bit longer, browsing the history, browsing through the pages and visiting the links.
If you need a welcome page, we have one. It’s right on the Top Menu, just after HOME. It explains what I’ve already told you; and it covers the basics of the Blog. It doesn’t appear as soon as you open the blog, but it’s there.
SWE Stuff
3. The RCT…? What exactly is that?
RCT stands for Regional Collegiate Team. We’re a group of Region Officers (hence “Regional” and “Team”) that are dedicated to using our postions as resources to help advance the Collegiate Sections. You can read more about the RCT by visiting the RCT page (click the link on the top menu).
4. What’s with all these abbreviations?
That’s the way SWE works. We’ve got a whole bunch of positions, and they’re usually long names. Frankly, I’d rather call myself an RCCE every five minutes than have to say or spell out Regional Collegiate Communications Editor (I’m sure you would, too). Here’s a list of what the most common abbreviations stand for (if I’ve let one out… let me know!):
RCR – Regional Collegiate Representative
RCCE – Regional Collegiate Communications Editor
RCT – Regional Collegiate Team (If it starts with an R – it’s most likely Regional).
RCMC – Regional Collegiate Membership Coordinator
RG – Region Governor
CLCC – Collegiate Leadership Coaching Committee
CIR- Collegiate Interest Representative
MAL – Member at Large (members of SWE not assigned to a particular Section).
BOD – Board of Directors
SWE – Society of Women Engineers (Did you really need that?)
Blogging Stuff
5. How do I get my story on the Blog? Do I have to write about anything specifically?
Well, we’d prefer that whatever you write be SWE related. (If it isn’t, chances are slim your story will get on the Blog.) There’s a whole category related to Collegiate Sections, and yet another Category dedicated to people. If you’ve got a Best Practice you’d like to share, or maybe an event you’d like to announce, send it in – the D-vas need to hear from each other! We’d also love to hear about outstanding D-vas – send us her story, and we’ll highlight it.
If you can’t write (I hear Writer’s Block is common), you can send in pictures. Please describe what the pictures are about though… it’ll give meaning and will help me understand why I’m getting pictures of six ladies dressed as marshmallows (OH – it’s a charity event!). You’ve noticed the Pictures page… we’ve got to keep it updated!
There’s also the Hot Topics…
6. Yeah, I heard about the Hot Topics? What are those?
Each month, we’ll be focusing on a specific Hot Topic. Say, increasing membership, or getting ready for finals, or thinking about you next SWE role. The goal of the Hot Topic is to share ideas, get your questions and problems out in the air and search for solutions.
For example: say the Section at the University of Diva Beach (I’m totally making this up) is having problems with getting their members to participate in their events. The Southeast Coast College Section does this wonderful activity, that not only attracts current members, but it also attracts new members into their Section… promoting participation AND increasing membership. By talking about this on the Blog, not only do the girls at Diva Beach benefit, but so do all of the Sections in our Region (and across the nation, by the way – this Blog is accessible to EVERY region).
7. No offense, but I’m sure I can do a better job at blogging than you’re doing. How do I get your position?
None taken. If you’d like to become the next RCCE, keep an eye on your e-mail, because the RCCE nominations announcement arrive via e-mail sometime in December. An official call for Region D RCRs and RCCEs will come out sometime from a month or two before the Regional Conference. Once the information becomes available to me, I’ll be posting it on the Blog. So check your e-mail and this Blog frequently from December to January.
If you can’t wait until my term is over (my last day is June 30th), send me your suggestions and complaints to rcce-d@swe.org.
